Annual Fundraisers



The NLCU Charitable Foundation Corporation (the "Foundation") is 100% volunteer led and run, and NLCU employees are its driving force, raising funds on behalf of the Foundation. NLCU employees volunteer countless hours each year through fundraising activities such as ticket sales, jeans days, catered lunches, community days and participation in the Foundation's two major fundraisers - the Annual Walk-A-Thon and the Annual Rod Benson Memorial Golf Tournament.

The Annual Walk-A-Thon is held in early June and the Annual Rod Benson Memorial Golf Tournament is held late in August. These two events raise the majority of funds for the Foundation, which it then distributes to other charities. In addition, for each of the two major funding events, a different charity of choice is selected to receive a generous portion of the proceeds raised.




Charity of Choice Criteria



Any charity under consideration to be named Charity of Choice for the Rod Benson Memorial Golf Tournament or the Annual Walk-A-Thon must meet the following criteria:


  • Province-wide scope of service

  • Non-denominational

  • Non-controversial

  • Non-political

  • Compliments NLCU's brand, mission and values

  • Well-established and federally registered as a charity

  • Maintains a presence in NL

  • Minimal administrative costs; the majority of donations are used to provide core charitable services

  • Donation received will have a material impact on the services provided by the charity

  • Funds will be used for services in NL

  • Has not been selected as a charity of choice by the Foundation for the past five years

  • For the Annual Rod Benson Memorial Golf Tournament, the charity must provide programs directed toward children and/or youth.
